Paul McCartney on Golden Globes

Paul will be on the Golden Globes tomorrow. I can't wait to see what kind of gags host Ricky Gervais (maybe the funniest guy on the planet) has in store. Hopefully it will be hilarious and Our Paul will be able to summon up his old Beatles-type humor.

I rarely watch the 'Globes'. The only awards show I never miss is the Oscars. I've seen it every year since I was a kid in the mid-60's. To me, the Oscars, regardless of how 'fair' they are, carries so much more weight than any other 'show-biz' award. The Grammy's are a joke and cater to whatever is popular at the moment. The Emmy's used to be significant, but since the rise of cable and demise of the 'Big Three' networks, I don't even know most of shows or actors nominated.

Ringo on Jimmy Fallon

Ringo was on Jimmy Fallon the other night. He played 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and 'With a Little Help From My Friends' along with two yawners from his new CD.

After his first number, Ringo took questions from viewers. An eight year old girl said see loves Help! (it's my favorite Beatles movie, too). She said her favorite scene was when they are skiing and wondered what Ringo's favorite scene was. Sadly, instead of saying something new or interesting he said 'I like the skiing scene, too' and proceeded to tell the same old story about how they had never skied before and director Richard Lester just put them on skis and had them go at it. Which is partly why it's so funny. But I've heard that story like 100 times.

I do have new respect for Fallon. He was not only obviously in awe of Ringo, and gave him the whole show, but joined in for 'A Little Help' singing back-up. And he got all of the lyrics right. Which isn't as easy as it sounds, cuz there's a lot of lines in those 'answering' vocals.

Beatles Mono Box Set

There seems to be to no lack of copies out there. I was at a Amoeba on Haight Street a few days ago and saw they had a huge stack of them.

Not sure how many 'extra' copies they made after the first run of 10,000, but I've heard it was 30,000 more. If you don't have it, get it before they actually do sell out. The packaging is better than the 'stereo' box and if I had to choose, I'd rather have the mono up to Magical Mystery Tour. Obviously, having both versions is best, but to me, the monos generally sound better, espeically Sgt. Pepper.

'Paul McCartney: A Life'

The new bio has some cool stuff, especially regarding the solo years.

Best insight: Ram, and specifically 'Ram On', was a nod to his old Silver Beetles stage name, 'Paul Ramon'. Wow. Never put that together. And it conjours up lots of thoughts...Paul resorting to his ancient alter-ego handle for his first full-blown studio LP. A cry for independence? Turning back the clock? Who knows, but it's pretty interesting.
